Install Optical Character Recognition (OCR)

OCR Server Options

Using OCR in Sintelix requires Sintelix to be connected to an OCR server. There are two OCR servers which can be connected Sintelix:

  • Sintelix OCR server (Sintelix version 7.0 and above), or
  • ABBYY FineReader (Sintelix version 7.7 and above).
Quick Summary

To configure OCR features in Sintelix:

  • Install an OCR Server (either ABBYY FineReader or Sintelix OCR), and
  • Ensure the Sintelix instance has an activation that includes OCR.
  • Next: Once installed, connect Sintelix to the OCR server in Admin > System Settings.

To install the ABBYY FineReader OCR server, please refer to their documentation: Administrator's Installation Guide.

Workflow

In the ABBYY FineReader OCR server, you need to configure a Workflow to produce HTML output so it can integrate with Sintelix.

Connect Sintelix

Once the ABBYY FineReader OCR server is running, copy the URL which is required to connect Sintelix to the server. See Connect OCR for further information.

Sintelix OCR Server Installation:

Before you start the installation process, ensure the following requirements are met:

Host Requirements

The host machine must have enough resources (processor, memory and storage) to run the hypervisor, the guest VMs you intend to host on it, and any other processes you expect to run.

The following hypervisors are supported:

  • VMware®
  • VirtualBox

The host machine requires an x86 compatible processor which must support SSE and SSE2 instructions sets.

Guest Requirements

The Virtual Appliance must be allocated with the following minimum specification:

  • Up to 20 GB hard disk space
  • 2 vCPUs
  • 8 GB RAM

To process more than two documents concurrently, you will need extra RAM and Cores. For example, for each additional document you will need 1 additional core and 2 GB RAM.

Firewall Ports

The port required to ensure communication with the webserver is, 80/TCP and/or 8080/TCP

  1. Download and install the Virtual Box installer from https://www.oracle.com/virtualization/technologies/vm/downloads/virtualbox-downloads.html
  2. Log in to MySintelix
  3. Navigate to Download > Optical Character Recognition
  4. Download the Sintelix OCR server zip file, extract the contents and run the .vbox file.

    This will automatically import the appliance into the VirtualBox Manager.

  5. Right-click the OCR server appliance, in the menu, hover over Start and select Normal Start

    This enables the OCR server in the VirtualBox Manager, and if the start is successful, the OCR server application window opens.

    If you encounter an error, clear the Enable USB Controller check box from the OCRServerTesting-Settings dialog.

  6. Once the OCR server is running, copy the URL which is required to connect the OCR server to Sintelix. See Connect OCR for further information.
